Intro to Tintypes – Full Day

In this hands-on workshop you will learn all the steps needed to coat, sensitize, shoot, develop, and varnish a 4×5 tintype. Each plate is a one-of-a-kind positive image on blackened tin, there are no negatives or enlargements in the process. We will develop plates in my portable darkbox, and discuss DIY methods for continuing a tintype practice, making it approachable to people of all backgrounds who may not have photography experience.

In the full-day course we will begin with a lecture covering the history of Wet Plate, comprehensive information about mixing chemistry and sourcing equipment, as well detailed information on safety and best practices. The rest of the class will be devoted to shooting with a one-on-one instructor assistance. We will work with studio lighting, with the option to work outdoors in natural light, weather permitting. Students can expect to shoot 6-9 plates during the class. We will end by varnishing our plates. Students are encouraged to use class time to advance personal projects, and are welcomed to invite models to work with during the class. This course is recommended for those who are seeking to build a strong foundation in the process that they can use to develop an ongoing tintype practice.
